Single-use carrier bags

Single-use carrier bags

From 1 October 2011, there will be a minimum charge of 5p on all single use carrier bags.

The single use carrier bag charge started on 01 October 2011.

The carrier bag charge was introduced to dramatically reduce the number of carrier bags used in Wales. This charge affects all retailers in Wales, not just those who sell groceries.

The Welsh Government brought in a 5p minimum charge on all bags (including paper bags).

The 5p charge should be enough to influence consumer behaviour and reduce the number of bags given out without putting an unnecessary burden on shoppers, or preventing impulse shopping.

It’s important to remember that no one has to pay the charge. It can simply be avoided by customers reusing their bags.

Voluntary code

The Welsh Government expects that the money raised from the charge should be passed on to charities or good causes in Wales, especially environmental projects.

They have developed a voluntary code. Retailers can sign up to the code and confirm that they are passing the money raised onto good causes.
